"Lupa" is a short film that artfully intertwines the narratives of Filipino Americans, exploring their multilayered experiences with land ownership in their ancestral homeland, the Philippines. At the heart of this film, the breathtaking beauty of the archipelago forms a stark contrast against the backdrop of generational trauma.
This film is not just about land ownership. It's a commentary on how the romance of the homeland can mirror the complexities of cultural identity. An original, sonic score vibrantly underscores each story, further intensifying the breathtaking beauty of the archipelago.
The film intricately blends past and present, joy, sorrow and acceptance, and breathtaking beauty. In its exploration of heritage
and modernity, "Lupa" paints an evocative picture of how home
can embody both beauty and a complex history.

Through Wilcken’s personal and professional journeys as a mambabatok, traditional tattoo practitioner, audiences gain insight into the history of ancient Filipino hand-tap tattooing, its near extinction, and its recent revival and practice in the Filipino diaspora. The Modern Mambabatok chronicles this resurgence of traditional hand-tap tattooing and how batoks, hand-tap tattoos, are used to express Filipino and Filipino American identity today.

Home Away from Home is presented by Balay Kreative Studios, a vibrant Filipino American art studio in San Francisco’s SOMA Pilipinas Filipino Cultural Heritage District. The studio draws its name from the word balay, meaning “home” in several Filipino dialects, including Cebuano, Ilocano, and Waray-Waray. Through the work of three Filipina American artists, Home Away from Home explores the complex emotions, histories, and relationships that shape both the Filipino diaspora at large and the Filipino American experience in the Bay Area. The artworks on view poignantly reflect the search for identity, belonging, and cultural preservation in a foreign land, while simultaneously paying homage to the resilient spirit of the Filipino community in creating a “home away from home.”
