Highlights from UNDSCVRD X: Culture Connected

On October 17-18, 2020, we held our first-ever online Filipino Cultural Festival, UNDSCVRD X. Translating the experience of our in-person night markets we all know and love into the digital space was not an easy task. After months of our team’s hard work, we put on a global event with four streaming hubs in LA, NYC, Manila, & SF, over 60 speakers, artists & performers, and countless virtual vendor booths to connect the culture of Filipino/a/xs all over the world.

We want to extend our biggest and deepest thank you to everyone who joined us for the first UNDSCVRD X. From chatting with media moguls to morning yoga, and from lumpia rolling to loving our kayumanggi, we celebrated Filipino/a/x music, art, culture, and kapwa with all of you. What was your favorite moment from X?

How did you enjoy X? Tell us how we can improve future virtual events by giving us your honest feedback in the form below.

Bridge The Gap

Worlds collided as we brought FIlipinx Hip-Hop and R&B stars together for a discussion on Filipino culture and it's impact on their music featuring Ruby Ibarra (USA), Jeff Bernat (USA), and Kiana V (Philippines). We enjoyed live performances and a lively discussion about their music, their inspirations, and staying creative during a pandemic with these 3 international artists.

3 The Hard Way

We sat down with legendary Bay Area DJ crew Triple Threat, Apollo, Shortkut, Vinroc, and Fran Boogie who have been moving the masses from a local and international level for 20 years. We heard how they got started as a group, winning the Red Bull Sound Clash, and how they're keeping DJ culture alive. The panel ended with an introduction to new Triple Threat members DJ Boogie Brown, Kid Dee, and UNDSCVRD/CTA's own DJ Kool Raul.

Unapologetically Kayumanggi

Join us in this passionate and heartwarming discussion as actors discuss their experiences growing up brown in the media business. They dive into hot topics such as decolonizing western standards of beauty and how to talk to your parents about mental health and religion.

Defining Communities: The Challenges and Opportunities of Filipino Cultural Districts

Watch as our panelists Desi Danganan of Kultivate Labs, Raquel Redondiaz of SOMA Pilipinas, Joseph Bernado of LA’s Historic Filipinotown, Dillon Delvo of Stockton’s Little Manila, and Joseph Orobia of Canada’s Kultivation Festival discuss the challenges and opportunities in building and supporting Filipino Cultural communities within their respective cities.

Alex Retodo & E-40 Lumpia Wrapping Demo

BEST (W)RAPPERS ALIVE! The founder of The Lumpia Company teams up with his business partner and homie, E-40, for the most hilarious lumpia wrapping demo ever recorded! Chef Alex is back in the lab, preparing 6 of his signature lumpia recipes for us. CAN YOU SAY CHICKEN TINOLA LUMPIA!?

Combating Anti-Blackness in Filipinx Hip-Hop Culture

This panel with Arnel Calvario (Kinjaz, Culture Shock, Kaba Modern), Bambu De Pistola (Beatrock), DJ Kuttin Kandi, and Dr. Rod Labrador (moderator) was close to our heart. While our community is making strides to address anti-blackness in Filipinx culture, it was important for us to give this conversation a platform at UNDSCVRD X during Filipino American History Month so we can continue having this dialogue in our own families and communities.

Undiscovered Talent

We put out an open call for talented Filipinos from across the globe and the results were incredible! We received over 70,000 votes from viewers at home for Undiscovered’s first ever talent competition. (not sure if this is for winner videos or interview)

Our top 3 winners performed during Undiscovered X! Big shout out to Kollective Hustle for helping to make it all happen.

Rocky G’s Performance

Shout-out to local Bay Area performer Rocky G for representing our hometown and SOMA Pilipinas with his stellar performance at UNDSCVRD X! A member of the Balikbayans that perform with Ruby Ibarra, Rocky G is an Undiscovered SF veteran performer taking the globe by storm as a musician, filmmaker, writer, and producer.

Subscribe to our YouTube channel to get notified when the rest of the panels are uploaded soon!
